2026 Tree Info!
What a winter!
In January we got hit with a massive ice storm. I know folks who were without power for over a week, while we were lucky to only lose power for a few hours.
When the limbs started falling we all headed out with our chainsaws to clear roads and help our neighbors. Hearing trees and branches crack and fall all over the neighborhood made everyone realize that it was going to be a long road getting everything cleaned up. As of today there are still six foot tall piles of derbies along our road.
While I was out in the freezing rain helping to cut a tree off of a neighbor's truck I realized I needed to order more than the usual number of trees this year.
I ended up ordering 400 trees and shrubs from the Illinois state nursery, up from the 250 I ordered last time. This is on top of the oak and black walnuts I'm growing out from seed, and the elderberry I'm growing from cuttings.
The full tree list is:
Chickasaw Plum (Prunus angustifolia)
Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)
Shellbark Hickory (Carya laciniosa)
Pecan (Carya illinoinensis)
Silky Dogwood (Cornus amomum)
Hazelnut (Corylus americana)
Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)
Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica)
Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)
If all goes according to plan then Saturday March 21 I'll be at Harpeth Knoll Park in Bellevue TN giving away a large assortment of native trees and shrubs from 9am until the afternoon. This isn't just for Bellevue folks, this is for anyone who wants some.
And please feel free to bring anything you want to give away yourself! I'll also have plenty of native flower seeds, as well as vegetable seeds for anyone who wants to start a garden this year.
Tell your friends, because it will take all of use to regrow Nashville's tree canopy.
